Spray Paint Door Panels
The hardest part was taping and sealing off the trim around the door.
Spray paint door panels. I opted to remove the door just easier to paint that way and opted to spray paint since my door has a lot of raised panels to paint around. Painting a door is a race against time. Even if you use a roller you can use a brush for the final coat to achieve this look. Spraying the doors only required pockets of 10 15 minutes at a time and freed up a lot of time to do other things.
Switch to a mini roller. Highly recommend going this route if you have a bunch of doors to paint. Once the doors were dry it was time to add the new hinges and knobs and rehang the doors. I needed to start with spray painting the trim before i removed the door.
If your door is paneled start with the panels. Consider a paint additive to slow down drying and improve leveling. Place the door flat on the sawhorses. Start with a dust free door. Begin by painting the edges with a brush. You have to lay down the paint and smooth it out before it becomes too sticky to work with or so stiff that brush marks won t level out and disappear. Wipe it down with a damp rag just before painting.
To remove the door wedge a flathead screwdriver or chisel in the joint between the hinge and the top of the hinge pins. Using semigloss exterior paint and a 2 inch angled sash brush with synthetic bristles paint around the edges of the panels. Spray the trim in long even strokes keeping the tip about 12 inches from the surface you re spraying. For doors overlap each successive spray pass by approximately 50.
A paintbrush will give you a nice hand painted look. You can use a low nap or foam roller or a paintbrush for this. Allow the door to dry completely before reattaching the hardware and rehanging the door if you removed it to paint.
